Live Stock Market Updates - Sensex, Nifty choppy; Banking, Metal drag

The BSE Sensex opened 26.10 points up at 28,398.33, while NSE Nifty opened 17.25 points up at 8,743.85.

At 10:49 AM, the S&P BSE Sensex is trading at 28,368 down mere five  points, while NSE Nifty is trading at 8,721 down mere six points.

The BSE Mid-cap Index is trading down 0.35% at 13,129 whereas BSE Small-cap Index is trading up 0.28% at 12,747.

Cipla, Asian Paints, Adani Ports, ITC, RIL, Sun Pharmaceuticals and ICICI Bank are among the gainers, whereas Axis Bank, Infosys, Hero Motocorp, Tata Steel, Power Grid and Wipro are losing sheen on BSE.

Some buying activity is seen in pharma, FMCG, consumer discretionary and utilities sectors, while metal, IT, teck, banking, and metal sectors are showing weakness on BSE.

The INDIA VIX is down 0.37% at 14.7075. Out of 1,862 stocks traded on the NSE, 661 declined, 847 advanced and 354 remained unchanged today.

A total of 48 stocks registered a fresh 52-week high in trades today, while 16 stocks touched a new 52-week low on the NSE.

Jindal Steel & Power Ltd is currently trading at Rs. 84.2, up by Rs. 2.5 or 3.06% from its previous closing of Rs. 81.7 on the BSE. The scrip opened at Rs. 83 and has touched a high and low of Rs. 85.4 and Rs. 82.55 respectively. So far 10036947 (NSE+BSE) shares were traded on the counter. The current market cap of the company is Rs. 7474.76 crore.

Reliance Communications Ltd gained 0.6% to Rs.51.35. RComm has signed an agreement to merge its wireless business with smaller rival Aircel Ltd. The new entity will combine R-Com’s wireless business and Aircel’s operations in India.

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd advanced 1.1%. The pharma company said its buyback offer of 75 lakh equity shares will open on 22 September. The issue will close on 5 October.

SBI slipped 0.91%. The bank said it had raised $300 million (about Rs.2,000 crore) through the country's first additional tier 1 (AT1) bond offering. The size of the Basel-III compliant bond was pruned from $500 million.

Tata Power is trading marginally higher at Rs.75.45. Tata Power on Wednesday announced that it has completed the acquisition of Welspun Renewables Energy and has appointed Chetan Tolia as CEO of the newly bought firm.

Ashok Leyland tumbled 3.4% to Rs.81.65. The board of automobile component firm Hinduja Foundries Ltd has given its nod for amalgamating the company with Ashok Leyland subject to regulatory and shareholders approval of both the companies.

BEML dropped 9.2% to Rs.932. BEML Ltd's standalone net loss widened to Rs 107.10 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2016. The company had posted a net loss from ordinary activities after tax of Rs 68.10 crore in the year-ago period, the company said in a BSE filing.

NBCC gained 1.6% to Rs.253. NBCC (India) Ltd reported 16% increase in consolidated net profit to Rs.47.09 crore for the quarter ended June 30.

Gujarat NRE Coke Ltd slipped 1.7% after the company reported its standalone net loss widened to Rs.108.80 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2016. The company had posted a net loss from ordinary activities after tax of Rs.60.66 crore in the year-ago period

IVRCL zoomed 2.9% to Rs.5.57. IVRCL has posted a loss of Rs.151.85 crore for the first quarter ended June 30, 2016, as against a loss of Rs.189.65 crore for the corresponding quarter last year on a standalone basis.

MMTC soared 4% to Rs.47.25. MMTC reported a net loss of Rs.7.01 crore for the first quarter ended June 30, 2016. The company had incurred a net loss of Rs.30.55 crore during the corresponding quarter of 2015-16.

Ajanta Pharma inched up 1.3%. Ajanta Pharma's promoters have agreed to consolidate their shareholding in the hands of seven family members and one family-controlled promoter group entity in order to give better visibility to the investors.

Rolta India is trading down 0.16%.  The company reported a consolidated net profit of Rs.23.1 crore for the quarter ended June 30 compared with Rs.32.70 crore reported in the year-ago period. 

The rupee opened marginally higher one paise at 66.88/$ against US Dollar Thursday as against the previous close of 66.89/$. 

Asian markets are lower this morning. Markets in China, Taiwan and South Korea were closed for public holidays on Thursday. Wall Street closed flat on Wednesday. The Dow Jones industrial average ended down 0.18% at 18,034.77 points and the S&P 500 gave up 0.06% to 2,125.77. The Nasdaq Composite added 0.36% to 5,173.77.

On the global front, the Bank of England will be a focus as the central bank is seen standing pat after easing policy last month, amid signs it overestimated the initial shock to Britain's economy from June's Brexit vote.

On the economy front, India's wholesale-price index (WPI) rose 3.74% in August, quicker than the 3.55% increase in July.

Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya to be present at a National Board for Workers Education and Development event in New Delhi. Finance Minister Jaitley to deliver the key note address at JP Morgan's Conference in New Delhi.

The IPO of L&T Technology Services, an arm of engineering giant Larsen and Toubro (L&T), was subscribed 71 per cent on the second day of the three-day bidding.

Indices take a breather..Nifty back above 8,700 mark

The Indian equity market fluctuated between gains and losses and closed higher on Wednesday. The domestic market snapped a two-day losing streak. Basic Materials, consumer durables, utilities, banking, power, industrial and telecom stocks led from the front, while IT, energy and teck stocks were among the major loser.

On the economic front, India's wholesale-price index (WPI) rose 3.74% in August, quicker than the 3.55% increase in July. IIP fell 2.4% in July 2016 over the same month last year. Industrial production expanded 2.1% in June 2016 over the year-ago month, while consumer price index (CPI) for August 2016 slowed to 5.05%.

Among the 50-stocks of NiftyBank of Baroda, Yes Bank, Tata Motors DVR, UltraTech Cement, Axis Bank, SBI and Tata Motors were among the gainers on NSE, whereas Bosch, Coal India, ONGC, TCS, Sun Pharmaceuticals, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Eicher Motors were among the losers today.

Finally, the BSE Sensex ended with a gain of 19 points at 28,372. The BSE Sensex opened at 28,345 touched an intra-day high of 28,416 and low of 28,259.

The NSE Nifty closed with a gain of 11 points at 8,727. The NSE Nifty opened at 8,711 hitting a high of 8,740 and low of 8,689.

The India VIX (Volatility) index was down 3.13% at 14.7625.

Out of 1,474 stocks traded on the NSE, 439 declined and 982 advanced today.In the broader markets, BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices each ended over 1%.

The rupee was trading up 2 paise at 66.90 per US dollar.

Sensex, Nifty volatile; Metal, FMCG drag

The BSE Sensex opened 8.05 points down at 28,345.49, whileNifty50 index opened 4.95 points down at 8,710.65.

At 9:29 AM, the S&P BSE Sensex is trading at 28,375 up 21 points, while NSE Nifty is trading at 8,725 up nine points.

The BSE Mid-cap Index is trading up 0.63% at 13,033 whereas BSE Small-cap Index is trading up 0.58% at 12,632.

Asian Paints, Axis Bank, SBI, ICICI Bank, Hero MotoCorp and RIL are among the gainers, whereas Tata Steel, Coal India, Tata Motors, ITC, TCS, HDFC Bank and HDFC are losing sheen on BSE.

Some buying activity is seen in realty, teleco, oil & gas, pharma, consumer durables and banking sectors, while metal and FMCG sectors are showing weakness on BSE.

The INDIA VIX is down 1.90% at 14.9500. Out of 1,831 stocks traded on the NSE, 406 declined, 1,028 advanced and 397 remained unchanged today.

A total of 17 stocks registered a fresh 52-week high in trades today, while 10 stocks touched a new 52-week low on the NSE.

The rupee opened lower by eight paise at 66.99/$ against US Dollar Wednesday as against the previous close of 66.91/$.  

US stocks have fallen sharply on Tuesday. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 1.41% to end at 18,066.75 points and the S&P 500 lost 1.48% to 2,127.02. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.09%  to 5,155.26.

Asian markets are lower this morning. Shanghai Composite and Nikkei 225 slippeed are trading in red, while Hang Seng is marginally up.

CPI for the month of August fell sharply to 5.05% yoy from 6.07% in July due to a steep fall in food prices. WPI number for August will be closely eyed today.

India’s June-September monsoon rains could start withdrawing from the north-western region of the country in the next 3-4 days, the weather department said.

Sensex drops over 400 points

Finally, the BSE Sensex ended with a loss of 444 points at 28,354. The BSE Sensex opened at 28,481 touched an intra-day high of 28,481.11 and low of 28,251.

The NSE Nifty closed with a loss of 151 points at 8,716. The NSE Nifty opened at 8,733 hitting a high of 8,747 and low of 8,699.

The BSE Sensex tanked over 500 points to 28,251 on weak global cues.  The Indian stock market declined most since Britain voted to leave the European Union on June 24. The equity market opened lower on Monday tracking weakness in Asia and a plunge in US stocks on Friday on rising prospects that the US Federal Reserve could hike interest rates soon.

 The S&P BSE Sensex is trading at 28,378 down 418 points, while NSE Nifty is trading at 8,726 down 141 points.

The BSE Mid-cap Index is trading down 2.47% at 13,016 whereas BSE Small-cap Index is trading down 1.65% at 12,649.

Infosys, Delta Corp, Balkrishna Industries, ICRA, Tech Mahindra and Redington are among the gainers, whereas ICICI Bank, Tata Motors, Axis Bank, Tata Steel and M&M are losing sheen on BSE.

Some buying activity is seen in IT and teck sectors, while realty, metal, auto, capital goods, banking power and finance sectors are showing weakness on BSE.

The INDIA VIX is up 14.30% at 15.1225. Out of 1,861 stocks traded on the NSE, 1,303 declined, 283 advanced and 275 remained unchanged today.

A total of 27 stocks registered a fresh 52-week high in trades today, while 19 stocks touched a new 52-week low on the NSE.

Nifty holds 8700 amid pressure, Sensex down 360pts; Europe sinks

Paving the way for stake sale in its commercial finance unit with a loan portfolio of about Rs 16,500 crore, Reliance Capital has got shareholders' approval for the transfer of this business to a separate company.

 Post the transfer, Reliance Capital would be applying to the RBI for registering itself as a Core Investment Company (CIC) and this would also facilitate the application of a banking licence, as and when the apex bank's policy permits.

 The transfer was approved by an overwhelming majority of 99.99 per cent votes in favour of the scheme of arrangement at the court-convened general shareholders meeting held on September 10, Reliance Capital said in a statement today. Reliance Nippon Life Insurance and Reliance Nippon Life Asset Management, both subsidiaries of Reliance Capital, already have a strategic partner Nippon Life Insurance - with 49 per cent stake.

 The Nifty going below 8500 levels will be surprising in case of a prolonged uncertainty on the global front, said Sanjay Sinha, Founder, Citrus Advisors. "If we have this uncertainty evaporating in the short-term somewhere around 8,700 points, we should see the markets take a support and then move up," he added. The current phase of correction is brining strength in the market and may take the markets higher than the current position. Adding to it, expectations of a double-digit earnings growth in the third and fourth quarter will keep the market going, Sinha said. 

The Cabinet today cleared the process, formation and functioning of the GST Council, which will decide on the rate of tax under the new indirect taxation regime. The Council, to be headed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and comprising of representative of all 29 states and two union territories, will have to be set up by November 11. It will decide on the tax rate, exemptions and threshold limits in the new indirect tax regime, which is expected to kick in from April 1, 2017. The government has notified September 12, as the date from which the procedure for setting up of the GST Council will be initiated and which will be completed within 60 days. 

Equity benchmarks fell more than a percent in afternoon trade as Federal Reserve officials’ comments on rate hike spooked markets globally. 

The 30-share BSE Sensex was down 364.09 points or 1.26 percent at 28433.16 and the 50-share NSE Nifty declined 123.45 points or 1.39 percent to 8743.25. 

European stocks were sharply lower as investor sentiment was rattled by concerns that the US Federal Reserve could be considering an imminent interest rate hike. The pan-European STOXX 600 was down 1.89 percent. Crude prices fell a percent after US oil drillers added rigs to look for new production as producers adapt to cheaper crude, with speculators cutting positions betting on further price rises. Brent crude futures were trading at USD 47.54 per barrel, down 1 percent, from their last settlement. US West Texas Intermediate futures were down 1.31 percent, at USD 45.28 a barrel.

At 10:37 AM, the S&P BSE Sensex is trading at 28,370 down 427 points, while NSE Nifty is trading at 8,732 down 135 points.

The BSE Mid-cap Index is trading down 1.96% at 13,083 whereas BSE Small-cap Index is trading down 1.38% at 12,684.

The rupee opened lower by 21 paise at 66.88/$ against US Dollar Monday as against the previous close of 66.67/$.

Asian markets opened lower on Monday. Shanghai Composite and Nikkei 225 slippeed over 1.5% each, while Hang Seng tumbled 2.5%.

Wall Street closed lower on Friday after Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren, a historically dovish policymaker, said the US central bank faced increasing risks if it waited too long to raise interest rates. The Dow Jones Industrial Average tanked 2.13% to 18,085, the S&P500 lost 2.45% to 2,127.

European stocks closed sharply lower after Wall Street stock indexes dropped and data showed Germany's exports fell in July.

Global markets are experiencing a free fall after worries of a rate hike by the US Fed were reignited when Boston Fed president Eric Rosengren warned of increasing risks if Fed waited too much longer to raise interest rates. North Korea meanwhile is in a defiant mode and ready to conduct yet another nuclear test.

The monsoon has disappointed towards the end with most parts of the country seeing below normal rainfall. Key macro data namely IIP and CPI inflation are scheduled to be released on Monday.

Announcements of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance IPO plans and Indiabulls Housing Finance public issue of NCDs are expected today. L&T Technology Services (LTTS) IPO is set to open today.

Four of the 10 most valued Indian companies together lost Rs.40,779.97 crore in market valuation last week.  The market valuation of TCS plummeted by Rs.31,723.89 crore to Rs 4,63,543.17 crore, taking the steepest hit among the top-10 firms.

India's forex reserves increased by $989.5 million to an all-time high of $367.76, the Reserve Bank said on Friday. According to the bulletin, the reserves had touched an all-time high of $367.16 billion previously. Foreign currency assets (FCAs) swelled by $952.2 million to $342.23 billion for the week ended September 2.
