Live Stock Market Updates - Sensex ends 41 points higher; Nifty above 8,700 mark

Closing Bell:
Finally, the BSE Sensex ended with a gain of 41 points at 28,413. The BSE Sensex opened at 28,398 touched an intra-day high of 28,444 and low of 28,311.

The NSE Nifty closed with a gain of 23 points at 8,749. The NSE Nifty opened at 8,744 hitting a high of 8,752 and low of 8,704.35.

The BSE Sensex opened 26.10 points up at 28,398.33, while NSE Nifty opened 17.25 points up at 8,743.85.

At 1:42 PM, the S&P BSE Sensex is trading at 28,342 down 31 points, while NSE Nifty is trading at 8,715 down 12 points.

The BSE Mid-cap Index is trading down 0.20% at 13,099 whereas BSE Small-cap Index is trading up 0.38% at 12,760.

Cipla, Asian Paints, Adani Ports, ITC, RIL, Sun Pharmaceuticals and ICICI Bank are among the gainers, whereas Axis Bank, Infosys, Hero Motocorp, Tata Steel, Power Grid and Wipro are losing sheen on BSE.

Some buying activity is seen in pharma, FMCG, consumer discretionary and utilities sectors, while metal, IT, teck, banking, and metal sectors are showing weakness on BSE.

The INDIA VIX is up 0.55% at 14.8450. Out of 1,862 stocks traded on the NSE, 712 declined, 862 advanced and 291 remained unchanged today.

A total of 62 stocks registered a fresh 52-week high in trades today, while 17 stocks touched a new 52-week low on the NSE.

The Nifty Media Index is trading up 3% at 2,954.10. The Media stocks are trading higher on the back of higher volumes on NSE. The Nifty Media Index opened at 2,873.50 and hits a high of 2,971.60 and a low of 2,854.70.

Reliance Communications Ltd gained 0.6% to Rs.51.35. RComm has signed an agreement to merge its wireless business with smaller rival Aircel Ltd. The new entity will combine R-Com’s wireless business and Aircel’s operations in India.

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd advanced 1.1%. The pharma company said its buyback offer of 75 lakh equity shares will open on 22 September. The issue will close on 5 October.

Yes Bank Ltd is currently trading at Rs. 1227.8, down by Rs. 25.6 or 2.04% from its previous closing of Rs. 1253.4 on the BSE. As per media report, the Securities & Exchange Board of India is looking into the lender's notices to stock exchanges about the planned equity placement (QIP).

SBI slipped 0.91%. The bank said it had raised $300 million (about Rs.2,000 crore) through the country's first additional tier 1 (AT1) bond offering. The size of the Basel-III compliant bond was pruned from $500 million.

Tata Power is trading marginally higher at Rs.75.45. Tata Power on Wednesday announced that it has completed the acquisition of Welspun Renewables Energy and has appointed Chetan Tolia as CEO of the newly bought firm.

Ashok Leyland tumbled 3.4% to Rs.81.65. The board of automobile component firm Hinduja Foundries Ltd has given its nod for amalgamating the company with Ashok Leyland subject to regulatory and shareholders approval of both the companies.

BEML dropped 9.2% to Rs.932. BEML Ltd's standalone net loss widened to Rs 107.10 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2016. The company had posted a net loss from ordinary activities after tax of Rs 68.10 crore in the year-ago period, the company said in a BSE filing.

NBCC gained 1.6% to Rs.253. NBCC (India) Ltd reported 16% increase in consolidated net profit to Rs.47.09 crore for the quarter ended June 30.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), India’s leading passenger vehicle maker, announced to partner Uber India through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Under the MoU, the Company will train over 30,000 individuals/Uber partner-drivers in safe driving over a period of 3 years.

Gujarat NRE Coke Ltd is currently trading at Rs. 3.5, down by Rs. 0.04 or 1.13% from its previous closing of Rs. 3.54 on the BSE. The company posted its standalone net loss widened to Rs.108.80 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2016 as against a net loss of Rs.60.66 crore in the year-ago period.

IVRCL zoomed 2.9% to Rs.5.57. IVRCL has posted a loss of Rs.151.85 crore for the first quarter ended June 30, 2016, as against a loss of Rs.189.65 crore for the corresponding quarter last year on a standalone basis.

The rupee opened marginally higher one paise at 66.88/$ against US Dollar Thursday as against the previous close of 66.89/$. 

Asian markets are lower this morning. Markets in China, Taiwan and South Korea were closed for public holidays on Thursday. Wall Street closed flat on Wednesday. The Dow Jones industrial average ended down 0.18% at 18,034.77 points and the S&P 500 gave up 0.06% to 2,125.77. The Nasdaq Composite added 0.36% to 5,173.77.

Nifty holds 8700 amid volatility; Hero, Tata Steel decline

The choppy trade continued for second consecutive session as investors remained cautious ahead of two-day Federal Reserve's policy meeting that will start on September 20. 

The 30-share BSE Sensex was down 30.49 points at 28341.74 and the 50-share NSE Nifty declined 11.95 points to 8714.65.

 Axis Bank, Hero Motocorp and Tata Steel fell over 2 percent while ITC, Maruti, BHEL and Cipla gained 1-2 percent.

 European stocks were mixed as global markets trod carefully amid nerves over central bank action.

 Oil prices rebounded after falling around 3 percent in the previous session, supported by an unexpected fall in US crude inventories. Brent crude futures were trading at USD 46.04 per barrel, up 0.45 percent, from the last settlement. US West Texas Intermediate futures were up 0.16 percent, at USD 43.65 a barrel.

MMTC soared 4% to Rs.47.25. MMTC reported a net loss of Rs.7.01 crore for the first quarter ended June 30, 2016. The company had incurred a net loss of Rs.30.55 crore during the corresponding quarter of 2015-16.

Ajanta Pharma inched up 1.3%. Ajanta Pharma's promoters have agreed to consolidate their shareholding in the hands of seven family members and one family-controlled promoter group entity in order to give better visibility to the investors.

Rolta India is trading down 0.16%.  The company reported a consolidated net profit of Rs.23.1 crore for the quarter ended June 30 compared with Rs.32.70 crore reported in the year-ago period.
