Sensex to open on a positive note

The harvest season down south marks a good start for our market too. The global cues are promising a good start. Last week’s IIP data was a positive surprise and investors will hope the inflation data expected today will also spring some pleasant surprise. This in turn could decide on what the RBI governor Raghuram Rajan does later this week.

Larry Summers has withdrawn his name from consideration to become the next chairman of the Federal Reserve. That makes Janet Yellen, vice chair at the Fed the top contender. Should she be appointed, Yellen would be the first woman to lead the organization in its 100-year history. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke's term is set to end in January.

While the attention was anyways on the central bankers globally, overnight developments are adding to the Fed interest. The minutes of the US Federal Reserve meeting is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. This will give a cue on the timing and downsizing of the Fed’s bond-purchase programme known as quantitative easing programme.

The U.S. central bank has indicated it is ready to wind down its economic stimulus, via its $85-billion-a-month bond-buying program.

Asian markets are positive. Japan's Nikkei 225 index marginally higher while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index is up  over a percent. South Korea's Kospi index added 0.7% while China's Shanghai index is marginally higher.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 75.42 points, or 0.49 per cent, at 15,376.06. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 4.57 points, or 0.27 per cent, at 1,687.99. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 6.22 points, or 0.17 per cent, at 3,722.18.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) prime ministerial candidate, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has called for strong leadership at the Centre.

Jet Airways' vice-president (commercial strategy and investor relations), K G Vishwanath, has resigned. He is the second senior executive to leave the airline after chief executive officer (CEO) Nikos Kardassis quit in June.
