Top economic news of the day - January 14, 2015

Imports of coking coal, a key fuel required for steelmaking, declined by 29.6% to 2.71 mn tonne (mt) in December, compared with 3.85 mt shipped in December 2013.

The ministry of agriculture has asked states to rationalise taxes levied on food grains, and has decided to broad base its procurement of food grains so as to avoid paying excessive taxes levied by some states on the procurement agencies.

The RBI is against broadbasing CRR, the portion of total bank deposits kept with the Reserve Bank, to include forex and gold reserves as it would entail an additional burden on the lenders.
