Vedanta Group's Punjab power project in trouble

The dispute arose after Talwandi Sabo Power, a joint venture between the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) and Sterlite Energy of the Vedanta group to set up the project, claimed a delay in construction by Sepco, reports a business daily.

Vedanta Group's proposed 1800-MW thermal power project in Punjab is reportedly in trouble due to legal dispute with Chinese contractor Sepco Electric Power Construction Corp.

The dispute arose after Talwandi Sabo Power, a joint venture between the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) and Sterlite Energy of the Vedanta group to set up the project, claimed a delay in construction by Sepco, reports a business daily.

Sepco approached the Punjab & Haryana High Court, alleging that it was forced to leave the project with 98% of the work completed, reports the daily. The Chinese company accused Sterlite of delaying payment even after pre-agreed project milestones were reached.

On 1st December, Justice Amit Rawal restrained Talwandi Sabo Power and Sterlite Energy from cashing the bank guarantees, according to the financial newspaper.

Rawal also appointed advocate Dheeraj Chawla as local commissioner to inspect the project location and prepare a report on inventory, according to court documents.

The court will hear the case on 17th December.
